John Peers (Concept)

I’ve recently had the opportunity to speak with John Peers in Rochdale about their hairdressing website. They left me some bits and pieces which included 5 really nice photographs they’d had done. During some downtime I couldn’t help but have a play around with some ideas (*cough* workaholic *cough*) and this sprung up as a result. Quite pleased with it as a rough Photoshop concept so here it is!

Walk Right Podiatry

Walk Right Podiatry is one of my first and best clients (I have to say that because it’s my fiance’s business!). This is the second incarnation of the website and forms part of the recent re-branding we performed on the business, focusing on private practice quality. For me it forms part of the leap in design standards I’ve started to achieve to compliment the high standard of code.

Underneath the site is based on Wordpress for the first time, as the initial website was using Website Baker and the transition to Wordpress has been flawless. Design wise we needed to portray the high standard of her clinic and generally bring the website (and hence business) up to date, whilst the site is accessible and taken the older visitor into account it is very much positioned towards younger affluent audiences looking for high quality private podiatry. I’m particuarly happy with the Services page which has benefited from some attention to detail in terms of typography and content layout.

As of writing the site isn’t 100% complete, there’s some extensive search engine optimisation work to perform over the next couple of weeks including a re-write of all the content, a custom appointment form to be dropped in featuring jQuery validation and submission and the blog side of the template to finish where I’m going to force her to reap the benefits of social media marketing.

Refined Internet

This site represents the latest of my numerous designs for Refined Internet – the B2C side of my services and holds the proud title of the one I’m happiest with and I feel it finally conveys the brand correctly.

Underneath the hood the site is built on Wordpress 2.7, but previously it has also been on the Website Baker platform. It started life as a full xHTML 1.1 compliant site, however with _blank throwing up errors in that doc-type and my reluctance to use Javascript hacks workarounds ended up backing down to 1.0 transitional.

One of the main aspects of this site is jQuery integration – it’s all over the place but in a useful manner with the main aspect being the banner section at the top of the page, it’s using the Slide plug-in and I’ve incorporated paging functionality. One problem I had was how to deal with visits to new pages once you’ve been presented with the banner on the homepage. The solution (rather than to create a separate very similar template) was to use some of the advanced Wordpress functions to determine if the current page is the homepage, if it isn’t then hide the banner section. Everything is still accessible by clicking the drop-down button that appears in such an instance.
